RURAL ROUTES

CHELSEA KATTLEMAN

This photo series is a visual documentation of the importance of the United States Postal Service within rural communities, specifically in Michigan. USPS is self-funded but has been running on a declining budget; in recent months it has been faced with many disruptions due to Covid-19 and 2020 presidential election. Mail has been delayed, endured corruption, undergone systematic change and is being pushed to be defunded and privatized. Many Americans will be affected by lower accessibility and higher costs. People depend on this essential service to timely receive their medications, bills, packages and letters from loved ones. The Postal Service is the only service that goes to every address in the nation - and they do it on a daily basis. Through rain or shine, an ongoing pandemic and corruption threatening their livelihood - nothing can stop the mail. This service and the connection it brings is vital to those that live in rural and distant areas. Our state’s thrive from the impact of small communities. Through these images I hope to show how deep the simple things run, the unique characteristics that each of these buildings exhibit and their rich history and significance to the towns they reside in.
